The Jungfraujoch has already been the scene of some spectacular events, and now ice hockey was also played on the connecting ridge between Mönch and Jungfrau. In the midst of it all was an Austrian star, Benjamin Baumgartner.
What do Roger Federer, the Klitschko brothers and Tony Parker have in common? They were all “parts” of events that were held on the 3,464-meter-high Jungfraujoch. Urs Keller, director of the Jungfrau Railway, had wanted to hold an ice hockey game at this height for many years. Now this plan has been realized.
The “Showcase” featured stars from SC Bern, with whom the Jungfrau Railway has a long-standing partnership, and the Swiss NHL players Nino Niederreiter, Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler, Pius Suter and Philipp Kurashev. Ramon Untersander, Simon Moser, Tristan Scherwey, Joel Vermin, Andri Henauer and Austrian star Benjamin Baumgartner played for the traditional Swiss club on the 30×15 meter synthetic ice rink.
Baumgartner, who is entering his third season with the capital city team this year, scored three goals in the 5:6 defeat. The players were thrilled by the event in this impressive setting: “It’s an amazing thing that was set up up here,” said Niederreiter via a press release.
