Austrians Plan to Spend More on Summer Vacation Despite Inflation and Geopolitical Uncertainty: Survey

Despite high inflation and the uncertain geopolitical situation, a large proportion of Austrians are in the holiday mood. 78 percent are planning a summer vacation this year and a budget that is 9 percent higher than in 2022. This is shown by a survey commissioned by the Europ Assistance Group, which belongs to Generali Versicherung. The average travel budget is 2360 euros (previous year: 2162 euros). The value is well above the European average of 1918 euros.

This means that going on vacation is somewhat more of an issue here than in the rest of Europe, where 75 percent have a summer vacation on the agenda.

“This year even greater holiday desire”

“The Austrians’ desire to travel is unabated. They have an even greater desire to vacation this summer and plan to spend more money on it,” says the CEO of Europäische Reiseversicherung, Wolfgang Lackner, who is also the head of Europ Assistance GmbH. After three years of the pandemic, it is not surprising that the desire to travel is high.

For the holiday barometer recently published by Europ Assistance, 15,000 consumers from 15 countries on three continents were surveyed between March 20 and April 7, 2022. The international survey examines holiday behavior, travel plans and trends.

According to the information, only Americans (EUR 2,772), Australians (EUR 2,807) and Swiss (EUR 3,477) want to spend more money on summer vacation than Austrians this year. The Germans with 2363 euros about the same.

These are the most popular holiday countries

The most popular travel destination for Austrians is Italy (29 percent). Holidays in Germany follow closely behind (27 percent). Croatia ranks third (17 percent). In contrast, in France and Italy, at 60 and 59 percent respectively, significantly more people want to book holidays in their own country.

According to Europ Assistance, the choice of holiday destination is significantly influenced by the budget (53 percent), climatic conditions (47 percent) and the range of leisure activities available locally (45 percent).

changed security needs

Of the good fifth (22 percent) of those surveyed who do not go on vacation, 47 percent said they could not afford it, 27 percent want to save because of the current situation. “Inflation is the biggest concern for travelers in all countries,” the travel insurer stated.

Corona has changed the security needs of Austrian holidaymakers. Two thirds of those surveyed stated that they were insured during a trip. According to the information, 16 percent want to protect themselves better with travel insurance than before the pandemic began. But otherwise Corona “no longer has any influence on holiday planning and is also no reason to worry”.
