Austrian, Swiss and Brussels: Germany approves aid for Lufthansa subsidiaries

The wait is over for Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Edelweiss and Brussels Airlines. Germany gives the green light for the rescue packages of the Lufthansa subsidiaries.

The wait dragged on: Although the Lufthansa Group received government aid packages in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and most recently also in Belgium negotiated, a crucial piece of the puzzle was missing: The German economic stabilization fund had to approve the aid for the subsidiaries Swiss, Edelweiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines. Since this had not yet happened at the beginning of August, half Lufthansa the daughter Swiss with an emergency loan.

This will no longer be necessary for the other daughters. At the request of aeroTELEGRAPH, a spokeswoman for the German Federal Ministry of Economics said early Monday evening (August 17th) that all three daughters would be released. One could confirm that the Economic Stabilization Fund Committee “today gave Lufthansa the green light to accept the funding commitments by Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.” This means that Swiss, Edelweiss, Austrian and Brussels can breathe a sigh of relief.

Austrian Airlines boss Alexis von Hoensbroech wrote on Twitter: “The relief is great, because the last hurdle has been overcome”. We are very grateful “that we are being helped in this historically unprecedented crisis and pandemic”.

Swiss and Edelweiss also welcomed the WSF’s decision to “approve the bank loan of 1.5 billion francs for Swiss and Edelweiss, which is 85 percent secured by the Swiss Confederation”. Swiss boss Thomas Klühr said: “We are very grateful that the financial support already guaranteed by the federal government in the form of a loan is now coming into effect.”
