VIENNA – Slalom skier Franziska Gritschová left the Austrian downhill skiing team at least until the end of this season because of love.
The twenty-six-year-old competitor fell in love with one of the coaches of the national selection, Floridan Stengga, and agreed with the union leadership that both of them will start in the current year as members of a private team. The APA agency informed about it today.
“Given the situation between me and my coach Florian Steng, it is not possible for us to continue like this in the national team,” Gritsch said on social networks.
“Always following your heart sometimes means taking new paths, often leaving your comfort zone and taking bold steps to not betray your feelings” added the three-time World Cup medalist, saying that it was a well-thought-out step.
Gritschová will continue to start in Austrian colors, but she must train and live during the race outside the national team. According to general secretary Christian Scherer, the union will cover part of the costs. After the season, union representatives and Gritschová will meet again and discuss how to proceed.
The owner of three silver and three bronze medals from the World Junior Championships made her World Cup debut in 2017. In February 2020, she was second in the combined in Crans Montana, and has two third places to her credit. In 2019, she won a silver medal in teams at the world championship.
