Austrian Prime Minister Karl Nehammer says Russian President Vladimir Putin “has his own war logic” in Ukraine.
On Monday, Nehammer visited President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as the first European leader since the outbreak of war. He tells the American channel NBC that Putin himself thinks he will win the war.
– We have to meet him, and we have to confront him with what we see in Ukraine, Nehammer says.
Before arriving in Moscow, Nehammer visited Butsja in Ukraine. In the city outside Kyiv, there have been reports that several hundred civilians have been killed, and evidence of war crimes committed by Russian forces has been found.
Nehammer says in NBC that he confronted Putin with what he had seen in Butsja and that “it was not a friendly conversation”. Putin is said to have agreed to cooperate on an international investigation, but he said he did not trust the West, Nehammer said.
