An Austrian court has ruled that the Ultimate Team card pack, a random item in the soccer game FIFA series developed by Electronic Arts (EA), violates the national gambling law, British game industry media Game Industry reported on the 6th (local time).
In a refund lawsuit filed against Sony in 2022, the Austrian District Court of Hermagon mentioned that FIFA Ultimate Team card packs are goods that have a certain level of monetary value attached to certain items, and that the item violates the Austrian National Gambling Act. It raised the hand of the game user group.
It then ordered Sony to pay each of these individuals about 338 euros (about 470,000 won).
The reason why the user group filed a lawsuit against Sony, not EA, the game developer, is that the purchase contract was made with Sony when the item was purchased from the PlayStation Store, an online store for the Sony console PlayStation.
