Marseilles. Austrians Lara Vadlau and Lukas Mähr claimed Olympic gold in the mixed dinghy event in their medal race on Thursday after coming from the back of the fleet.
After a brief pause as they waited for officials to confirm the points tally, the Austrian duo celebrated in traditional fashion, capsizing their 470-foot boat and standing on the upturned white hull, waving their country’s flag.
Japanese duo Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka stayed near the front of the pack throughout the double points final to secure silver, while Swedes Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson took bronze.
The Spanish duo of Jordi Xammar Hernández and Nora Brugman, runners-up in the 470 world championships in 2022 and 2023, and world champions in 2024, were relegated to fourth place overall.
The wind was sufficient to get the medal race underway without delay, with shifts in the breeze testing the crews as they had to choose a favourite side of the course.
Although the French duo of Camille Lecointre and Jérémie Mion won the medal race, it was not enough to get them onto the podium, leaving them in sixth place overall.
