–“Austria was neutral, Austria is neutral and will remain neutral,” Nehamer told reporters today during a visit to Qatar.
Neutrality is important, the chancellor said, adding that he considered the issue of Austria’s neutrality closed.
Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, Austrian politicians and the media are debating whether the country should join NATO. Pamela Randy-Wagner, chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party, the second largest party after Nechamer’s Austrian People’s Party, has already rejected such a course of action.
Instead, it has called for an effective army and better cooperation in security and foreign policy in Europe.
