Austria Unblocks 12th EU Sanctions Package Against Russia – Latest Updates

Austria has unblocked the adoption of the 12th package of EU sanctions against Russia, transmits December 15 TASS, citing a source on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels. It is clarified that the new package has not yet been formally approved.

Let us recall that on December 14, Reuters reported that Austria is seeking the exclusion of Raiffeisen Bank International from the Ukrainian blacklist of “war sponsors” in exchange for signing new EU sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Previously, Hungary obtained from Ukraine an exclusion from the blacklist of the OTP bank. Experts believe that this prompted Raiffeisen Bank International to seek a similar solution at the political level.

On December 14, the UK introduced an embargo on the export of a number of dual-use goods to the Russian Federation. The British authorities have issued two by-laws that further tighten sanctions against Russia. The first document reduces the export of British goods to the Russian Federation, including machine parts and electronic components. The second bans the import of Russian diamonds into the UK from 1 January 2024.
