/ world today news/ Austria supports the construction of “South Stream“, confirmed its president Heinz Fischer.
“In essence, the South Stream project is expedient and useful,” the president said at a joint press conference in Vienna with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. The project was already supported by the Austrian government.
Russia considers the South Stream project to be strategically important for Europe’s sustainable energy supply, Vladimir Putin said to the Soviet Union. Gazprom and the Austrian oil and gas company OMV cooperate actively. On the agenda is the construction of the Austrian section of the South Stream gas pipeline. We believe that the project is of strategic importance for sustainable energy throughout Europe,” Putin said.
According to him, energy occupies a special place in the economic cooperation between the two countries. “In 1968, Austria became the first Western European country to conclude a contract with the Soviet Union for the supply of natural gas. The partnership in this sphere is impeccable. All these years, the Soviet Union and then Russia conscientiously fulfilled their obligations,” the guest pointed out.
Putin emphasized that the signing of the agreement with Austria is an important practical step towards the realization of the South Stream project. /ITAR-TASS
