Austria opens the way to full Schengen membership for Bulgaria and Romania, reports the Austrian edition “Kurier”. The two countries are also expected to join on land in the spring of next year.

The Austrian Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, will meet with his colleagues from Bulgaria and Romania on November 22 in Budapest at a forum organized by the Hungarian Presidency, the publication reports. According to the Courier, a package of measures will then be adopted that both countries must fulfill for full Schengen membership.

Already last week, Karner himself stated that Austria could reconsider its veto on the full membership of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen, which was another softening of Vienna’s position.

As of March 31, Bulgaria and Romania joined the zone, but only for air and sea borders.

Yesterday, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Romania, Catalin Predoiu, met with the new ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Romania – Ula Kraus-Nussbaumer, with whom they discussed the progress of the process of accession to the Schengen area.

In information to the media from the department, it is confirmed that the next important meeting will be held between the Ministers of the Interior on November 21 and 22 in Budapest with the participation of Romania, Bulgaria, Austria and the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
