Now things are moving fast: Italy opened its borders again on Wednesday, Austria will follow on Thursday. Just in time for the holiday season, there are signs of opening in a whole range of tourist destinations. So is there nothing standing in the way of your vacation abroad?
–
It’s not that simple – and the situation can change from day to day. VIEW shows the great vacation overview.

Italy
Yes, the borders with Italy are open today. And you can also move freely within the country – without having to keep a quarantine. However, some regional presidents would have liked to delay the travel approval for Lombardy a little – and are considering accompanying protective measures. How Radio SRF reported that tourists would have to fill out a questionnaire upon arrival in Sardinia. And the region’s campaigns are considering requiring Corona rapid tests on newcomers.
–
Anyone who still drives must know: In any case, distance rules will apply everywhere, even on the beach. In closed rooms, also in public transport and if the 2-meter distance cannot be maintained, a mask is mandatory. In the shops you have to shop with gloves. Those who do not follow the measures risk a fine of the equivalent of 420 to 3200 francs.
–
The freedom to travel only applies as long as the number of new infections does not increase again. In this case, regions would be closed immediately, the government announced in Rome.
–
Spain
Spain will only open its borders from July 1st – it is unclear whether all regions are accessible to foreign tourists. The two-week quarantine is also to be dropped for open regions.
–
The holiday destinations of the Balearic Islands (with Mallorca and Ibiza) and the Canary Islands are pretty sure to receive guests. Perhaps even before July 1: The Balearic Islands plan to greet certain tourists as early as June 23. As of now, the Swiss are not among them. First, Mallorca is to be opened to Germans, French and Scandinavians. However, the Spanish Ministry of Health has yet to give his blessing to this pilot, like that “Mallorca newspaper” reported.
–
Rigorous protective measures also apply in Spain. Including a mask requirement if the 2-meter distance cannot be maintained. It is not yet clear whether this will be eased at the beginning of July. Beach fun is regulated – if it is too full, authorities can deny access.
–
Should a tourist experience corona symptoms, the Balearic health authorities can order a 14-day quarantine, also for accompanying persons.

Austria
Austria opens its borders on Thursday, June 4th. At least to neighboring countries. Anyone entering from Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary can pass without a corona test or quarantine. This was announced by Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (50) on Wednesday. There is one exception: Italy. The restrictions on the southern neighbor remain for the time being. The goal is an “opening to Italy as soon as the numbers allow it”. This could be the case before June 15th.
–
Schallenberg also described other countries such as Sweden, Great Britain and Spain as “difficult cases”, in which it is not yet possible to say when an opening will be possible.
–
If you want to go to Austria, you should preferably take the car. The airports have limited operations, Austrian Airlines will only resume operations on June 15. There are also restrictions on cross-border trains, especially the popular night trains. These will only start operating again on June 26th.
–
From June 15, the obligation to wear a mask should only apply at the following locations: in public transport, in the health sector including pharmacies and for services if the minimum distance of 1 meter cannot be observed.
