Austria captain Markus Suttner ends his career – football

Austria captain Markus Suttner will end his active career at the end of the current Bundesliga season.

The Viennese announced this in a broadcast on Tuesday morning. The homemade player won a championship title (2013) and the ÖFB Cup (2009) with Austria and has played 310 competitive games for the favorites so far – including in the Champions League and the Europa League.

“My active career will come to an end in the summer. After careful consideration with my family, I have decided to hang up my shoes,” the 34-year-old Hollarunner is quoted as saying in the broadcast.

The decision was made last summer

“The decision to retire was made last summer and I informed the club of it back in the fall. It’s been 17 years since my first professional game in the 2nd division against Gratkorn in 2005 and I’m happy to have had this unique job for such a long time period to be allowed to exercise.”

“I’ll soon be 35 and emerge from my career without any injuries, which means a lot to me. I don’t want to stand in the way of our young guns either. I still feel physically fit, but I’m too excited about the new chapter in my life,” says Suttner, who moved from Austria to Ingolstadt in 2015 and was then also under contract with Brighton and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

In 2020 he returned to Austria. “It was an honor for me to have been a player at all these clubs, I was able to experience unforgettable times at all clubs.”

Schmid and Ortlechner with words of praise

Austria coach Manfred Schmid only has words of praise ready for his outgoing captain: “I would like to thank Markus for the always respectful, professional and loyal cooperation. I take my hat off to his career. He is at every one of his stations due to his attitude to sport has become a leader and has always been able to demonstrate his qualities.”

“But above all, he has grown dear to me as a person, as we have already experienced a lot together. Be it at the academy, with the Young Violets or the joint championship title in 2013. In the summer, a circle was closed, so to speak, in that we professionally reunited, he was and still is my captain and therefore an important contact person for me. I would like to wish him all the best for his professional future. As far as I know him, it will be a successful one,” said Schmid.

Sports director Manuel Ortlechner also wishes Suttner all the best for the future: “Markus Suttner was and is an absolute leader, he proves that every day to this day. He put his bones in for Austria for many years and more than deserved his football boots in the summer to hang up. After his return, he helped Austria turn things around and improve their sporting performance and image. It is a self-determined career end, you can only take your hat off to that.”
