Australia’s Charing Cross Photo Faces Backlash Amid Generative AI Controversy in Annual Photo Contest

Four years ago, the photographer Boris Eldagsen won the Sony WPA photo contest, but he refused the prize because his picture was created with the help of artificial intelligence. He mainly wanted to point out the issue of generative AI. Now we have another minor scandal associated with generative AI. It was about a photo contest from Charing Cross Photo, which is an Australian photography shop in Syndey. He eliminated the photo from the competition Suzy Dougherty with the image appearing to be created using an AI system and they could not confirm or rule out such a thing from the photo’s metadata. So they followed their instincts and discarded the film, although they liked it a lot.

The author of the image objected that it was a photo of her son with mannequins, which she took at the Gucci exhibition, and that it was definitely not created by AI. She also said that she doesn’t even know how AI photos are taken, and that she’s just learning about ChatGPT (it doesn’t even create a photo, there are other systems for that). Charing Cross Photo then published an update regarding the whole situation, but the apology was only half-hearted. Next year, Suzy can participate in the photo contest without an entry fee, but the jury still blames the photographers more for the fact that it is not clear from the metadata how the picture was actually taken (which is also true). CCP has received a lot of criticism on Instagram for its stance.
