The soap opera Neighbours has been closed successfully. The very last episode was broadcast on Friday after 37 years and it attracted 1.2 million viewers in home country Australia, reports Variety. In 2009 it was the last time that a broadcast was watched so well.-
The score of more than 1 million viewers was many times higher than usual. In the last week, the viewing figures were between 139,000 and 163,000 viewers. In Melbourne, where the series is set, most of the fans were in front of the television.

Neighbours closed Friday with an extra-long 90-minute episode. The series was forced to pull the plug after almost 9,000 episodes after the British channel 5, the main backer, had pulled out. The Australian producer could not find a new lender.

The soap started in 1985 and over the years marked the breakthrough of big stars such as Jason Donovan, Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie. They were all featured in the final episode. Natalie Imbruglia, Delta Goodrem and Holly Valance also played in Neighbours.
