The incident happened at a domestic game. The batter’s straight drive hit the umpire squarely in the face.
SYDNEY: It’s time for umpires to wear protective gear to prevent injuries during cricket matches. An example of this is umpires like Bruce Oxenford managing international matches. The umpire stands with a special type of weapon. But Australian umpire Tony de Nobrega was taken to hospital with serious injuries during the match. The incident happened at a domestic game. The batter’s straight drive hit the umpire squarely in the face.
The umpire was injured while officiating a third-tier match between North Perth and Wembley District under the Suburban Turf Cricket Association (WASTCA). The incident occurred during a game at Charles Weyard reserve.
WASTCA said about the injury. No surgery is required. But it is under the observation of doctors. We wish Tony all the best for a speedy recovery from his injury. Hope he wakes up soon,” WASTCA posted.
This is not the first time such events have happened. In 2019, 80-year-old umpire John Williams died after being hit by a ball during a local match in Wales. Five years ago, the same happened to an Israeli umpire.

And amateur games compared to international matches, given the varying levels of skill and awareness?
Today, we are discussing a tenuous issue in the world of cricket: safety measures for umpires during matches. With us, we have two esteemed guests, Mr. Aiden Reid, a cricket analyst and commentator, and Mr. John Walker, a former international cricketer, to shed light on the matter.
Mr. Reid, in your opinion, what should be done to ensure that umpires are adequately protected from such accidents during matches?
Aiden: Hi there, firstly, it’s great to be here discussing such an important issue. In my opinion, umpires need to wear protective gear that has been designed specifically for cricket. The current helmets and other gears are not enough. I think they should adopt a headgear like the ones worn by hockey players or even go as far as using face masks like in American football to protect them better. More importantly, the umpires need to be trained to know how to react during such situations and what precautions they can take. Regular drills and practice could help avoid such unfortunate incidents.
John, as a former cricketer, what are your thoughts on this? Do you feel that umpires need additional training?
John: Absolutely. The current training that the umpires receive might not be sufficient to prepare them for such situations. They need to be trained in various scenarios and how to respond to them appropriately. It’s essential for their safety as well as the smooth functioning of the game. However, I feel that the onus also lies on the players, especially if they are amateur or domestic players. They should be teaching to be more aware and careful of their surroundings, particularly when it comes to potentially dangerous situations like this.
Aiden, what are your views on this?
Aiden: I completely agree with John. While the players also need to be aware, it’s ultimately the organizers’ responsibility to ensure that the umpires are properly equipped and trained. They should invest in better safety gear and provide adequate training for those on the field. It’s about prioritizing the wellbeing of the umpires, who are essential to the game of cricket.
Does the format of the game play a role in these incidents? Is it more common in domestic
