Paris-Roubaix will not have been enough for him. Yet indigestible for the majority of runners, the Hell of the North was followed by a dessert for the Australian runner Cameron Wurf (Ineos-Grenadiers). Registered to protect his leader Filippo Ganna, who finished in 6th place, the one who has participated in four Grand Tours nevertheless reached the finish at the Vélodrome de Roubaix, more than 22 minutes after the winner of the day Mathieu Van der Poel.
These 256.6 kilometers of racing, including 54.5 on cobbled sections, were not enough for the Australian. Just after his lap and a half of the track, Wurf got off his bike to reach Belgium and the Ghent region. As soon as he arrived, he took off and ran a half-marathon. Despite the fatigue, this seasoned triathlete covered the 21.2 kilometers in 1h26, an impressive average of 4’06” per kilometer.
His comment: “So bumpy it hurts to pee”
It is still important to remember that Cameron Wurf is used to these efforts. A triathlete since 2015, he has notably won three Ironmans and finished the most famous Ironman in Hawaii in 11th place in 2022. Before starting his cycling career, he had also practiced rowing brilliantly, with a medal of gold at the under-23 world championships in 2003 and a participation in the Athens Olympics, where he finished in 16th place in the lightweight double sculls.
