A recent Australian study said that those born in the 1990s have the worst mental health compared to other generations that preceded them
In their study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, researchers from the University of Sydney used surveys to track the mental health of nearly 30,000 adults over a period of 10 years (between 2010 and 2020).
The scientists concluded that “the 1990s generation was not only the worst in terms of mental health, but their emotional problems showed few signs of improvement during the study period, unlike the older generations.”
The researchers believe that “social media, which made participants feel as if they were not good enough, is primarily responsible for their poor mental health.”
“Technology is largely to blame,” said Dr. Peter Baldwin, a senior researcher at the Black Dog Institute.
He explained that people who were born in the 1980s had the Internet, but those who were born in the 1990s had social media, which brought with it a “flood” of social comparisons that are very harmful to mental health.
“What young minds really wanted to know was: ‘Do I belong in this?'” Baldwin continued. Am I good enough?” He added, “If I open Instagram (the activities of the Meta company, which includes the social networks Facebook and Instagram, are banned in Russia, as they are considered extremist) and see 100 models and athletes… “As a businessman, that will be a very difficult metric to measure.”
It is noteworthy that the “Meta” company (which includes the social networking networks “Facebook” and “Instagram”, banned in Russia, as extremist) has been sued by 33 American states, on charges of “contributing to the youth mental health crisis”, by exposing children and adolescents to… To social media addiction.
While another study found that just 90 seconds of viewing thin bodies on social media can worsen the mental health of young girls.
