When King Charles visited the Australian parliament, an Australian senator delivered a tirade against the British monarch.

After a speech by the British king, native Lidia Thorpe walked to the podium and shouted: “This is not your country. You have committed genocide against our people. Give us back our country. Give us what you stole.” from us: our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people you destroyed our country.”

Thorpe, 51, was eventually removed from the venue by security guards shouting “you are not my king”. King Charles and Prime Minister Albanese of Australia did not respond to the uprising and did not comment on what happened later.

Thorpe received little support from the audience:

Thorpe is an independent senator for the state of Victoria and has long advocated full independence from Australia. She is of Aboriginal origin.

In 2022, she made headlines when she called Queen Elizabeth a settler while taking the oath of office in parliament. “I pledge allegiance to Her Colonial Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” she said with a raised fist at the ceremony, before being asked to repeat the oath without that language.

Australia became independent in 1901 after more than a century as a British colony. However, the British monarch remained the head of state and therefore Charles is still king. A recent poll showed that 45 percent of the population support the monarchy, 33 percent are in favor of a republic and the rest have no choice.
