Australian Prime Minister under fire after buying multi-million dollar villa during housing crisis

The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, is under fire in his own country because he bought a multi-million dollar villa. He did this while at the same time presenting a new plan to build affordable houses because there is a housing crisis in Australia.

According to critics and some members of the opposition, Albanese has lost contact with reality and the timing of the purchase is particularly bad.

“The real problem for Australians is that a lot of people want to buy a house, but it’s very difficult for them to do so. Especially because the current government is doing a poor job of driving policy to get things done make it better,” said politician Paul Fletcher in Australian media.

But a large number of MPs are defending the Prime Minister’s purchase, according to ABC News because most are property owners themselves. Research shows that, of the 227 parliamentarians and members of the Senate, there are only twelve who do not have a home and that the majority even have three or more houses, some even six or seven. Only two in three of the Australian population are home owners.

There is a huge housing shortage in Australia. Houses are very expensive, especially in the big cities, and it is difficult for first time buyers to buy a house. The country’s largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, are named the most expensive cities in the world. Albanese wants to build more than a million houses in the coming years to deal with the problems.

Albanese reportedly bought a nearly €3 million beach town in Copacabana, north of Sydney. Albanese himself says that he bought the house with his partner and that he wants to live there after he retires.

He will call the case a private matter. He also says that he grew up in social housing so he knows what such a situation can be like.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Australia in May next year.
