Australian Prime Minister Threatens to Return Novak Djokovic

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison ensured there was no special treatment for Novak Djokovic. The world number one is in danger of being sent home from Australia and missing Australia Open 2022 regarding the status of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Anger has emerged among the Australian public following news that Djokovic has been granted a medical exemption from appearing at the 2022 Australian Open, which starts on 17 January.

Djokovic’s Covid-19 vaccination status has so far been questioned. Meanwhile, the Australian Government prohibits people from abroad who have not been fully vaccinated from entering the country, except for people who can prove medically that it is not possible to be injected with the Covid vaccine.

Tennis Australia as the organizer of the Australia Open and the Victorian Regional Government also stated that players who could appear were those who had already undergone two doses of the vaccine, or who could show evidence that they could not be medically injected with the Covid vaccine.

The move by Tennis Australia and the Victorian Government to allow Djokovic to appear at the 2022 Australian Open has angered some. Morrison then tried to calm the situation by ensuring Djokovic would not receive special treatment.

“If Djokovic is not vaccinated, then he must be able to provide evidence he cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. If the evidence is not satisfactory, then he will not be treated differently, he will be sent home on the next flight. There are no special rules for Novak Djokovic,” said Djokovic. Morisson quoted from The Guardian.

Australian Government regulations state that people who have not been vaccinated or cannot show medical evidence that they cannot get the Covid-19 vaccine must undergo a 14-day quarantine before entering Australia.

It’s not just the Australian public and politicians who are upset by the news that Djokovic has been exempted. A number of players at the 2022 Australian Open also questioned the committee’s decision.

“Maybe if I don’t get vaccinated, I probably won’t get an exception. But congratulations to Djokovic for getting permission to come to Australia and compete,” said British player Jamie Murray.

Djokovic is the defending Australian Open champion. Last year the Serbian beat Daniil Medvedev to win the title three times in a row.
