Australian Police: Russian Hackers Behind Health Insurance Attack | Tech

Russian hackers are behind a cyber attack on Australian health insurance Medibank, Australian police said Friday. Last month, hackers managed to get hold of the data of nearly ten million people, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Australian Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw says a group of cybercriminals carried out the hack from Russia. According to Kershaw, the “loosely affiliated group” was also behind major cyber attacks in other countries. Australia says it is contacting Russian authorities.

Earlier this week, hackers released personal information of policyholders, including about abortions. The hackers decided to do so after Medibank refused to pay a $ 10 million (€ 9.82 million) ransom.

The cyber attack has a major impact in Australia. Former tennis champion Todd Woodbridge, who is recovering from heart surgery, said BBC news who was harassed by criminals after the hospital where he was treated was leaked.

Medibank CEO David Koczkaro asks people not to search for information. According to him, policyholders can be dissuaded from seeking medical assistance.
