The Romanian climbed to the quarter-finals thanks to her victory in three sets over Iga Swiatek.

DThe second player in the world and seeded No. 2, Simone Halep joined the quarter-finals of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne on Sunday. Despite the loss of the first set, the Romanian eliminated the young Polish Iga Swiatek, 17th in the world, in three sets: 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 after 1:50.
At 29, Halep will play her 5th quarter-final in Melbourne in eleven appearances, a performance she achieved in 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2020. She will face American Serena Williams (WTA 11, 39), still looking of his 24th Grand Slam crown, winning Sunday’s duel against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 7) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Winner at Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019, the Romanian had failed in the semifinals last year against the Spanish Garbine Muguruza. Her best result in this first Grand Slam tournament remains a final lost in 2018 against the Danish Caroline Wozniacki.

Halep also took revenge on Swiatek, 19, who had eliminated her at this same stage of the competition last fall at Roland Garros with a final score of 6-1 and 6-2 when she was seeded N.1. The Varsovienne then won in the final to win the first tournament of her career. Swiatek had already been beaten in the round of 16 last year in Australia.
