Madrid (dpa) The tennis world number one Novak Djokovic has left his participation in the Australian Open open even after the semi-finals with Serbia at the Davis Cup.

He will now switch off for a few days and not think about tennis, said the 34-year-old after the 1: 2 semi-final defeat in Madrid against Croatia. The decision as to whether he will compete in the first Grand Slam tournament of the new year from January 17th to 30th in Melbourne is imminent. “I will comment on it soon,” said Djokovic.
Only vaccinated tennis professionals are allowed to play in Melbourne. The defending champion recently left his vaccination status open. He had stated several times that this was a private matter. Most recently, his father Srdjan Djokovic said on the Serbian television station Prva TV: “Under these extortions and circumstances, it is likely that he will not take part.” If Novak Djokovic were to compete in Melbourne, he could overtake Swiss Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal with his 21st Grand Slam title.
