Australian Open 2024 – Kostyuk lost to Gauff with a fight in the quarterfinals, TSN, news 1+1 — Sport

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk (#37 WTA) failed to make it to the singles semifinals Australian Open-2024.

In the quarterfinals, the 21-year-old native of Kyiv lost to the fourth ranked player in the world, the current champion of the US Open, the American Cory Gauff, in an intense fight.

The three-set match lasted 3 hours and 7 minutes and ended with the defeat of the Ukrainian with a score of 6:7, 7:6, 2:6.

It was the second personal meeting of tennis players. Before that, they played each other only once – in 2022, in the 1/8 finals of the WTA 500 tournament in Adelaide, the American won with a score of 6:3, 5:7, 6:3.

For the first time in her career, Marta played in the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament. Before the current draw of the Australian major, her highest achievement at the Grand Slam competition was reaching the 1/8 finals of Roland Garros-2021, where she lost poltsi Izi Shviontek.

It should be noted that another Ukrainian – Dayana Yastremska – will play in the 1/4 finals of the individual tournament of the Australian Open. For a place in the semifinals, she will compete with 19-year-old Czech Linda Noskova, who knocked out Elina Svitolina in the 1/8 finals – the first racket of Ukraine due to a back injury withdrew from the match in tears in the first set.

The Australian Open 2024 main draw will continue until January 28. The current champion of the competition is the Belarusian Arina Sobolenko, who, due to the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, was admitted to the competition only in neutral status.
