Australian Open 2022 Day 4: Czechs in Action, Djokovic Continues Assault

As part of the fourth playing day of this year’s Australian Open, the first half of the matches of the second round will take place. There will be three Czech representatives in action, Brenda Fruhvirtová will challenge defending champion and world number two Arya Sabalenková, Barbora Krejčíková will try to confirm the role of favorite against Tamara Korpatschová and Tomáš Macháč will play against Frances Tiafoe. Last year’s champion Novak Djokovic and Ons Jabeurová will also fight for promotion to the top thirty-two in a match with Mirra Andrejevová.

Of the Czechs, only Krejčíková is a favorite

Barbora Krejčíková will start the program as seed nine on the adjacent court number three. In the opening round, she had a lot of trouble with the wild card Mai Hontama, and she will try to confirm her role as the favorite against Tamara Korpatsch. The former French Open champion has advanced to at least the round of 16 in her last two starts at Melbourne Park.

Tomáš Macháč will aim for his premier third round at the Grand Slams. He failed to succeed in the second round at this venue three years ago against Matteo Berrettini and a year later against Maximo Cressy. This time, he will play against former quarterfinalist and 17th seed Frances Tiafoe for promotion to the top thirty-two.

Brenda Fruhvirt claimed her first major tournament win on the top circuit two weeks ago and advanced to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career at the ongoing Australian Open. The only 16-year-old Czech will play the Night Session in the Rod Laver Arena and will challenge the world number two, the defending champion and one of the biggest favorites, Arya Sabalenkova.

Jabeurová is in for a hit with comet Andrejevová

Ons Jabeurová could certainly have a much easier opponent for the second round as the sixth seed. The three-time Grand Slam finalist will face last season’s comet Mirra Andrejeva. The 16-year-old Russian has never beaten anyone from the TOP 10 ranking (0:4 record), but she already owns five TOP 20 scalps and ranks among the most dangerous unseeded players in the tournament.

Novak Djokovic will end the program at the Rod Laver Arena. With 10 triumphs, the tournament’s most successful player will continue his assault on a record 25th Grand Slam laurel against home hope Alexei Popyrin. The current ranking leader is the unequivocal favorite, in Tokyo 2019 he allowed only six games to the Australian.
