Fognini wins the derby with Caruso, quarrel between the two at the end of the match
Fabio Fognini beats Salvatore Caruso in the all-blue derby of the 2nd round of the Australian Open. At the John Cain Arena it took five hard-fought sets to decide the winner, who won at the fifth set tie-break. First set won by Caruso, with Fognini who, however, takes command of the game in the second and returns to a tie. After calling the medical time-out due to a physical problem, the Montecarlo champion crashes in the third set. However, a pass in the fourth by the Sicilian is enough to get back on track and go to the fifth. Here on 2-3 and 30-0 Fognini, Caruso injured his foot: after being medicated, he returned to the field. Match fought to the end, with Fognini winning 14-12 in the tie-break, after having canceled a match point. Immediately after the match ends verbal confrontation between the two Italian tennis players. In the next round Fognini will cross one between the Australian De Minaur (21st seeded) and the Uruguayan Cuevas.

Berrettini suffers but beats Machac: 3rd round
Suffers more than expected Matteo Berrettini, but manages to hit the 3rd round in Mebourne, his best career result. Ranked # 10 and ninth favorite of the tournament, he passed 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. the Czech Tomas Machac, 20 year old n.199 in the ranking, coming from the qualifiers, at his first presence in the main draw of the Aus Open. Game that was decided by the greater experience at these levels of the blue, which broke the rival in every start of the set won. Despite many errors and with little precision with his beloved forehand, Matteo was surgical in the palle break, as opposed to a very inaccurate Machac (1/13). The serve was good, according to statistics: 19 aces and 67% of firsts in the field. In the 3rd round the level rises for the Italian, who will deal with the Russian Karen Khachanov, 19th seed in seeding: three previous ones, all in 2019 and all conquered by Berrettini.

Sonego, fatal comeback with Lopez: ko in 5 sets
End of the bitter race for Lorenzo Sonego. A defeat difficult to digest after leading two sets to zero. The 25 from Turin, n.35 in the ranking and 31 in the seeding, ended up giving up 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, after three hours and 18 minutes of battle, to the Spaniard Feliciano lopez, 39 year old # 65 ATP, 75th consecutive participation in a Major (record). The difference in the conversion of breakpoints is fundamental: for the Spaniard an impeccable 3 out of 3, one for each set, for the blue only 2 his 11.
