Australian Nick Kyrgios wins Washington for the second time

Washington, Aug 7 (EFE) .- The Australian Nick Kyrgios conquered this Sunday the ATP 500 tournament in Washington for the second time in his career, by beating the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 and 6-3.

Kyrgios, a recent finalist at Wimbledon, when he lost to Serbian Novak Djokovic, gave Nishioka no chance and beat him for the fourth time in four clashes between the two.

The Australian, number 63 in the world ranking, had also beaten Nishioka in the third round of this same tournament in 2019, en route to the title.

This victory will allow Kyrgios to gain 26 positions in the ranking and this Monday he will be number 37 in the world.

Intractable on serve, the Australian player finished his tournament with 96 aces and punished a Nishioka who was contesting the third final of his career on the professional circuit, the first in an ATP 500 tournament.

Kyrgios put the match downhill by getting the break in the first game and defended it until 6-4, which gave him an advantage, against a Nishioka who had the merit of not stopping fighting at any time.

The Japanese lost serve again at the beginning of the second set and was unable to recover it against a Kyrgios who sentenced him with another break in the ninth game, for the final 6-3.

The Australian was crowned after an intense tournament, in which he had to overcome the round of 16 and the quarterfinals on the same day, on Friday, also saving five match points against the American Frances Tiafoe.

“Thanks to the city of Washington, I love this place, I feel like home. I’m excited to be back here,” Kyrgios said during the awards ceremony.

He also joked with Nishioka, a player with whom he has been friends since he was fourteen years old, wishing him “many more finals” and expressing the wish that the balance between the two “remain the same”.
