Australian Navy Develops AI-Powered Submarine, ‘Ghost Shark’, as Part of Global Competition

In Sydney, Australia, the Australian Navy is working to develop a submarine that will be powered only by artificial intelligence. The submarine, which has been named “Ghost Shark”, will have no human crew, writes Reuters.

“Ghost Shark” will be as long as a school bus, and the plan is for three such submarines to be ready for use in mid-2025.

The grand production is part of a competition between the United States, its allies and China. The goal is to develop artificial intelligence-controlled weapons that will operate autonomously, according to Reuters.

Expert with prompt message

The daily newspaper has been in contact with Morten Irgens, who believes the development is frightening. He is a strategic advisor to OsloMet and Høyskolen Kristiania.

Irgens has worked with artificial intelligence for over three decades, and has engaged in what is referred to as lethal autonomy.

His opinion is resoundingly clear:

– Taking the lives of other people should never be left to a machine.

China is stepping up

According to Reuters, the project in Australia is driven by time constraints.

“It is a competition, the outcome of which can determine the global balance of power,” writes the international news agency.

China’s military buildup is now the largest and most ambitious of any country since the end of the Second World War, writes the company Anduril, which builds the “Ghost Shark” submarines, in a message to the news agency.

– A crisis can occur with little or no warning, they write further.
