Captain Australian National Team, Thomas Deng, had a long journey before finally being able to compete in Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He was a refugee from Africa.
Australia started the steps at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a sip. The Olyroos won 2-0 over Argentina. In the match at the Sapporo Dome, Sapporo, Thursday (22/7/2021), Lachlan Wales and Marco Tilio were the goalscorers for Australia.
Thomas Deng was appointed by the Australian coach, Graham Arnold, to the captain’s armband. His performance in raising the Australian defense resulted in a clean sheet against Argentina.
The Tango team recorded by the official Olympic website was able to record 12 shots. There were as many as 5 Argentine shots on target, but no goals.
“It is a great honor to be able to wear the captain’s armband and the green and gold shirt,” Deng said on the website Olympic.
“And you know, there’s no limit. You know, that shows that you have to believe in yourself, and as long as you work hard, anything is possible,” he added.
Deng then told how he and his family became Australian citizens. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Deng was just 6 years old when his family fled the conflict in Sudan and was granted refugee status in Australia.
Deng took refuge with his four older brothers and his mother. While his father, who is a doctor by profession, lives in Kenya. After moving to Kangaroo Country, Deng never saw his father again.
“My junior career was basically at Adelide. My first club was Adelaide Blue Eagles, then I moved to Melbourne. That was when I played at Polonia for two seasons and finally moved to Green Gully. I had a good experience there. I really enjoyed it ‘ said Deng again.
