Australian crab ‘invasion’

Scorpions in Egypt, crabs in Australia. If we go to the Bible, the 10 plagues that he talks about and that would end humanity range from a hail that devastates the city, the river waters stained with blood, a plague of locusts, a plague that leaves no living animal, a cloud of flies …

The fact is that this week a ‘plague’ of crabs has been seen on an island in Australia. It is something coincidental, because in the southern country this crustacean migration occurs every year, only that in 2021 it has been a little ahead.

The reason for the ‘invasion’ of crabs

Millions of crabs leave the forest after the rains in October or November and head to the ocean to mate. Throughout that journey, they pass roads and bridges that must be closed, because they would all be crushed.

It occurs on the so-called Christmas Island, a small island in the northwest of Australia that witnesses the annual migration of its entire population of crabs, estimated at about 50 million, the highest in the world.

They usually eat leaves, fruits, flowers and seeds, but sometimes they can eat their own young. The population of the island prepares every year not to end up with an animal colony that has its role in the life cycle of the island.

This year they have built a bridge with a metal fence, so that the animals cross more comfortably and are not run over. The population prepares for weeks for this migration that lasts a few days.
