Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Cases of Covid-19 infection in Australia increasingly worrying. On Thursday, (26/8/2021) the country first reported more than 1,000 coronavirus infections in a day.
Quotes AFP, the state of New South Wales, where the most populous city of Sydney is located, announced a record 1,029 Covid-19 cases over a 24-hour period. Of the new cases, 969 were detected in greater Sydney, up from 838.
This rapid increase in Covid-19 patients has forced Sydney’s Westmead and Blacktown hospitals to reach maximum capacity levels. They even decided to set up a tent to screen and serve patients.
State Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian said authorities had doubled the state’s number of intensive care ventilators to 2,000 at the start of last year. Despite his precarious condition, he is optimistic that Sydney can survive the crisis once vaccination rates increase.
“It may be different to the help you got earlier because of the situation, but know that the system is working,” Berejiklian said at a televised media conference.
Sydney along with several major cities such as Melbourne and Canberra have placed the region under strict lockdown conditions. This forced the economic activities driven by these cities to be temporarily suspended.
Australia itself has a low vaccination rate. Currently the Kangaroo Country has just injected a full dose of vaccine to 32% of its population. Prime Minister Scott Morrison expects to hit 70% by the end of the year.
To date, Australia has recorded 46,743 cases of Covid-19 cumulatively, since the pandemic struck. There were a total of 986 deaths in total.
