Australian battery maker Novonix said on Monday it had signed a binding agreement with Volkswagen-founded PowerCo to supply a minimum of 32,000 tonnes of high-performance synthetic graphite.
Under the agreement, Novonix will supply synthetic graphite for five years, starting in 2027.
PowerCo, founded by German automaker Volkswagen, is a battery company that oversees international factory operations.
Novonix said its Riverside plant, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is expected to begin commercial production in 2025, with a production target of 20,000 metric tons per year (tpa).
The battery maker also said the company has progressed plans to build a second production facility in the southeastern United States, which would have an initial capacity of 30,000 tpa with plans to expand at 75,000 tpa.
The Brisbane-based company signed an agreement with Panasonic Energy earlier this year to supply synthetic graphite to the latter’s North American operations.
