Former Australian coach Ange Postecoglou has been appointed manager of Celtic Glasgow, where he must regain the title of Scottish champion lost this year, the club announced on Thursday.
The 55-year-old coach signed a one-year contract with the team of the 51 national titles, whose bench has been held by Scotland’s John Kennedy on an interim basis since the February 2021 departure of Northern Irishman Neil Lennon.
Lennon resigned in the middle of a failed season, at the end of which Celtic failed in their bid for a tenth consecutive title, finishing second, behind their great rival, Glasgow Rangers, champions with 25 points of advantage.
“I will do everything possible to bring our great club back to the top and at the same time produce football that our fans like,” promised the new coach, quoted in the club’s statement.
The Australian was not the first choice of the Celtic leaders, who first courted former Bournemouth coach Eddie Howe before negotiations ended unsuccessfully in late May.
Postecoglou arrives from Japan, where he coached Yokohama F. Marinos, with whom he won the national championship in 2019. His step at the helm of the Australian team (2013-2017) was marked by victory at home in the Asian Cup of Nations in 2015, a novelty for the mainland island, and tickets for the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.
