Australia Withdraws Bid for 2034 World Cup, Clearing the Path for Saudi Arabia

Australia has decided against bidding for the 2034 World Cup, finally clearing the way for Saudi Arabia. As the desert state’s last possible competitor, the Australian association decided not to register its interest in hosting the tournament with the world association FIFA shortly before the deadline.

“We have examined the possibility of bidding to host the World Cup and, after considering all factors, have come to the conclusion that we will not do so in 2034,” Football Australia said in a statement. Any applicants had until Tuesday to confirm their interest.

Apart from Saudi Arabia, which has been criticized for human rights violations, among other things, no one has dared to take cover. The final application must be submitted by July 2024. There is little doubt that Saudi Arabia will win the contract.

Recently, Indonesia rejected its plans for a joint application with Australia and other countries, and more and more nations are gradually siding with Saudi Arabia. Shortly after Saudi Arabia’s advance, the Asian confederation AFC announced its support for the extremely rich kingdom.

Australia, co-host of the 2023 Women’s World Cup with New Zealand, wants to bid for the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup and the 2029 Men’s Club World Cup instead. The Summer Olympics will also take place in Brisbane in 2032.
