Australia Tightens Visa Rules: Influx of Migrants Expected to Halve by 2023

Australia announced tighter visa rules on Monday. The influx of migrants could therefore halve over the next two years. In particular, the Australian government wants to tighten visa rules for international students and low-skilled workers.

Australia wants to overhaul what it says is a “broken” migration system. By halving the number, the government aims for an influx of a maximum of 250,000 people per year.

Net immigration in 2022 and 2023 is expected to reach a record. According to Home Secretary Clare O’Neil, the increase is mainly caused by international students.

“We have been working around the clock to find the best balance in Australia’s migration system,” O’Neil said ahead of the release of the government’s new migration strategy.

Under the new policy, international students will require higher scores on English tests. Arrangements that allow students to extend their stay in Australia will also be ended.

According to government figures, around 650,000 international students live in the country. Including former students, that number approaches 860,000.
