Australia surprisingly qualified for the round of 16 with a victory over Denmark

We know the name of the second selection from group D who will accompany the French team in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup. Far from being given favorites at the start of the competition, Australia validated their ticket thanks to their victory obtained against Denmark (1-0), Wednesday 30 November. The Socceroos emerged from the group stage for the second time in their history, the first time in 2006.

Few imagined the Australians meeting in the round of 16 in a group made up of Tunisia – surprise winners of France in the other match (1-0) – and Denmark. It was against the Danes that Graham Arnold’s players secured their qualification for the rest of the tournament.

Accustomed to eighth place, reached in five of the six previous participations in the World Cup, the Scandinavian selection seemed better armed. His two victories against France in the League of Nations in June (2-1) and last September (2-0) had even led to believe that he could aspire to first place in this group D.

Denmark without ideas

Against Australia Denmark showed the same flaws of the first two outings against Tunisia (0-0) and the Blues (1-2): an offensive game without ideas. The Danish Dynamites close their tournament in bottom place of the group, without the slightest victory, and above all with a second defeat.

Opposite, the Socceroos did not steal their place in the round of 16. They were solid and tight in the first half to fend off attacks from Mathias Jensen (11And), Andreas Skov Olsen (25And) and Christian Eriksen (29And). Then they were more offensive coming back from the locker room, before setting up a victorious counter-attack, led alone by Mathew Leckie (1-0, 60And).

A goal that flooded the hopes of the Danes, but also those of the Tunisians, from distance. The Carthage Eagles virtually qualified thanks to Wahbi Khazri’s goal (58And) against France. It lasted only two short minutes. At the full-time whistle, Australia celebrated qualification in a great outburst of joy.

In the round of 16, the Socceroos will face the winner of group C (Argentina, Poland or Saudi Arabia), on Saturday 3 December at 20:00. They will learn their opponent’s name in front of the television Wednesday night, before preparing to create a new surprise.
