Brisbane (dpa) – In a shootout with police in Australia, six people have been killed, including two policemen. Officers went to a log cabin near Wieambilla, about 300 kilometers northwest of Brisbane, in connection with a missing persons case. There they shot her.
After a siege that lasted about six hours, two men and a woman, aged between 45 and 47, were shot and killed, Queensland Police said on Tuesday. The exact background of Monday’s crime was not initially clear. Apparently, the officers were ambushed, Australian media reported.
Two policemen die
“They didn’t stand a chance,” Queensland Police Union chairman Ian Leavers told Australian media. According to information, the dead police officers are a 26-year-old and a 29-year-old. Another police officer sustained a gunshot wound. The fourth officer was unharmed. A 58-year-old neighbor was also killed.
Already on Monday it was known of the death of the neighbor and the two policemen. After the officers were fired during the operation, a special commando stormed the property.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed dismay. “Horrific scenes at Wieambilla and a heartbreaking day for the families and friends of the Queensland Police officers who lost their lives in action,” he wrote on Twitter.
