“Tomorrow and the next few days could be even worse, much worse than what we saw today,” Berejiklian said on television, as reported by Reuters and AFP on Sunday (11/7/2021).
The day before (10/7), the state reported 50 new cases, the previous 2021 high. Sydney now reports a total of 566 new COVID-19 cases.
Although Sydney is already in its third week of lockdown, the number of new cases continues to grow among the unvaccinated population. As a result, the lockdown rules were tightened on Friday (9/7). Berejiklian warned that the stay-at-home order was expected to remain in effect.
“Given where we are and given that the lockdown should have been lifted by Friday, everyone can say that is highly unlikely under the current conditions,” Berejiklian said.
Meanwhile, there are 52 COVID-19 cases currently being treated in hospitals. Fifteen people are in intensive care, another five require ventilators.
Health authorities said those hospitalized in Sydney included 11 people under the age of 35 and more than three-quarters of the patients had not received the vaccine.
