Australia on alert, Covid continues to spike despite Sydney lockdown

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Government Australia standby because of the case Covid-19 in the state of New South Wales is still soaring over the last three days though Sydney already applied lockdown.

New South Wales officials said that half of the total 24 cases of Covid-19 infection detected on Thursday (1/7) came from communities outside the quarantine cluster.

The spike in cases occurred when the NSW capital, Sydney, was still implementing a lockdown since last weekend.

“(This) raises concerns. That’s what we will look at in the next few days and beyond as a measure of our success,” NSW Chief Minister Gladys Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney.

Berejiklian said that there are still many people who do not obey health protocols. Many residents with flu-like symptoms are still “going about their business” and transmitting the virus to others.

“We can’t let that happen. You have to assume that you are infected with the virus or that those you come into contact with have the virus so act accordingly,” Berejiklian said as reported by Reuters. Reuters.

Australia continues to expand lockdown and tightening of Covid-19 control policies in various regions in order to suppress the transmission of the Delta variant of Covid.

After applying lockdown in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Darwin, recently the city of Alice Town which is the gateway to the Uluru World Heritage Site also implemented lockdown.

The local government asked all residents in the city to stay at home as they are still investigating whether any tourists infected with the new variant of the corona virus have traveled to the area.

The state of South Australia has reportedly only recorded cases of locally transmitted Covid-19 this year. However, they decided not to implement a lockdown because they claimed the infection case had been contained.

Meanwhile in Queensland, three new cases of Covid-19 infection were reported. Then in the state of West Australia, there was one case of corona infection, and North Australia had zero cases.

Australia is one of the developed countries that has succeeded in stemming the transmission of the corona virus by means of a strict lockdown, implementing social distancing, and rapid contact tracing.

However, the emergence and spread of the Delta variant, which was first detected in India, has again raised concerns for Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government about a new wave of Covid-19 transmission in Kangaroo Country.
