Australia-New Zealand 2023 Women’s World Cup Breaks Spectator Records

As detailed by the FIFA Council (formerly the FIFA Executive Committee), the Australia-New Zealand 2023 Women’s World Cup has already exceeded the total number of spectators of France 2019.

This, after two weeks of competition on the oceanic continent; event that, according to the highest regulatory body for international football, has already gathered more audiences than during the entire previous edition.

“The World Cup that is still in progress has exceeded expectations in several aspects,” said the leadership of the International Federation of Association Football.

“After 48 games in Australia and New Zealand, 1.222 million spectators went to the stands, with an average influx of more than 25,000 people per stadium,” the sports body pointed out.

According to these figures, compared to the France 2019 World Cup, this edition has had an increase of 29%.

For Sarai Bareman, a former Samoan soccer player, FIFA Women’s Football Director, almost two million fans are expected to attend the stadiums of international competition.

“I am confident that between now and the final there will have been more than 1.9 million fans through the turnstiles. The tournament has been incredible so far,” Bareman said.

The person in charge of women’s football before FIFA contextualized that “tickets were sold out for several matches, such as Australia’s first match against Ireland, in Sydney, in front of 75,000 people”, while other procedures carried out by New Zealand, also hosts, “attracted a significant number of fans.

“We have broken records almost daily. In some countries, for example, the data exceeded those of the men’s World Cup,” Bareman said.

Finally, the former Samoan player recalled: “the 2019 tournament brought together 1.1 million spectators in the stadiums. The growth of women’s football has been exponential.”
