Australia, Melbourne – Fear of chaos: Violent vaccine protests

Last week, Melbourne experienced wild protests in the streets.

It all started with construction workers in the city protesting against the authorities’ decision that all construction workers in the city must have received at least one dose of the corona vaccine by 23 September.

The protest test ended in ugly, violent scenes.

Afterwards, the construction industry in the big city has been shut down for two weeks. This means that 300,000 people will be out of work.

The head of the trade union for the construction industry, John Setka, has News.com claimed that the demonstration was couped by extreme organizations.

– The drunk, fascist idiots are the reason why the construction workers have to sit at home without being paid for the next two weeks, Setka said.

New demonstrations

On Tuesday, new demonstrations are expected in the center of Australia’s second most populous city, with over 5 million inhabitants.

– The protests continue until our demands are heard. Bring friends and family for support, wear work clothes, it says in a message that is spread on social media, News.com reports.

Stands on its own

Authorities chose to introduce the requirement for at least one vaccine dose after several outbreaks in the state of Victoria.

– We have had several outbreaks related to construction sites. They are a mobile workforce that likes to work in different places, and travel longer than other jobs. There have also been concerns about the industry’s ability to follow infection control rules and guidelines, Industry Minister Tim Pallas explained, according to News.com.

The decision to shut down the industry for weeks came after the demonstration went out of control. Pallas insists that workers are only allowed to return when they meet the requirement to have taken at least one vaccine dose.
