SIDNEY – Woolworths Supermarkets Australia announced tear-free shallots will be sold in stores worldwide Australia.

“A unique onion lives up to its name, one that might keep you from shedding tears when cutting it,” Woolworths said in a statement, Xinhua reported.

According to the statement, onions contain only a small amount of natural chemicals and enzymes which are also known as volatile compounds, which cause watery and irritated eyes.

In addition, these compounds will gradually decrease after being harvested, compared to ordinary shallots whose compounds increase over time.

According to Woolworth, the tearless shallot crop has been developed over decades using natural methods, including hybrid breeding of existing shallot varieties, resulting in a less “pungent” and slightly sweeter taste than common onions.
