During a visit to Fiji, Wonga acknowledged that Australia had neglected its responsibilities in climate matters under previous governments.
She promised that Australia would no longer ignore the Pacific and their calls for climate action.
“We were elected with a platform that promises to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050,” said Wonga, whose is the first solo visit abroad since the new Australian government took office.
She stressed that the government will keep its promises and transpose them into law and will soon submit a new commitment to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Wonga also said the new Labor government, which replaced the Conservatives, hopes to hold a UN climate summit with Pacific island countries in the future.
