Victoria, Australia’s second most populous state, reports 13 new cases of Covid-19
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CANBERRA — Australia extends lockdown (lockdown) in the State of Victoria. The decision was taken to stop the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus.
Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews revealed, lockdown will not be revoked because new cases are still being detected in the community. Extension details lockdown will be given on Tuesday (20/7).
“There will probably be some sunshine for a few days and then there is a very high chance that we will return to lockdown again. That’s what I’m trying to avoid,” said Andrews explaining why lockdown not revoked according to schedule, Monday (19/7), as quoted from Reuters.
Victoria, Australia’s second most populous state, reported 13 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday. That number decreased compared to the previous day, which was 16 cases. All recorded cases are local and interrelated.
The state of New South Wales (NSW) with Sydney as its capital city reported 98 new locally transmitted cases. That number also decreased compared to the previous day, which was 105 cases. At least 20 new cases are contagious while in the community. “The number 20 is a number we really want to push. The closer it is to zero, the sooner we can end the lockdown,” said NSW Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian.
NSW has twice extended its lockdown in Sydney since it was first imposed on 26 June. The strict restrictions are scheduled to be lifted on July 30. Fast contact tracing, community compliance with social distancing rules and enforcement lockdown, has helped Australia contain the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak.
So far, Australia has recorded a relatively low total of 31,900 cases with the death toll reaching 914 people.
