Australian authorities announced that they will extend the lockdown of some 250,000 residents from a neighborhood in the north of Sydney due to an outbreak of covid-19 without specifying a date for the end of the measure, imposed on Saturday and ending at midnight this Wednesday, according to EFE.
The focus of Playas del Norte accumulates 97 infections since it was detected last week and has motivated other jurisdictions in the country to impose movement restrictions to and from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales and the country’s most populous city with 5.3 million inhabitants.
Although the strict confinement in the affected neighborhood will continue, the head of government of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, indicated that they will slightly relax the measures between 24 and 26 December to allow small Christmas gatherings.
“We still do not know how the virus entered the community and we want to make sure that there are no strains or chains of local transmission that have not been detected before,” Berejiklian told the media.

In the rest of the city there are no movement restrictions or closures, although authorities limit gatherings in homes to up to 10 adults and an unlimited number of children during Christmas celebrations.
Australia accumulates more than 28,230 cases of covid-19, including 908 deaths, of which 20,360 infections and 820 deaths correspond to the outbreak in the city of Melbourne which occurred between June and November and was linked to errors in the quarantine centers for international travelers.
