Australia: Dirty spinach causes hallucinations

Contaminated spinach in Australia has resulted in dozens of people being hospitalized with various symptoms of the disease. Some patients complain of tachycardia and hallucinations. That national poison information center warns against consumption, spinach is available in many supermarkets.

So far, 130 cases have been reported in the state of Victoria, the agency said. People are being asked to stop buying and return the affected salad mix with the contaminated spinach. It was sold by supermarket chains Woolworth, Cole, Aldi and Costco, among others.

According to the Australian Poison Information Center, possible symptoms after consumption include hallucinations, dizziness, dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat, facial flushing or fever. Responsible for the recall is the Australian food control authority, reports the British newspaper, among other things “The Guardian”.

The contaminated spinach appears to have come from Riviera Farm in Victoria. The cause is currently unclear, probably weeds could have contaminated the spinach. It is possible that poisonous plants grew near the cultivated spinach.

Dr Brett Summerell, a scientist at Sydney Botanic Gardens, suspects it may be nightshade. “Very likely. When the plant is young, it has dark green leaves and is difficult to distinguish from spinach.”

Due to heavy rains and flooding, many farms in Australia are currently struggling with weed infestation. Australian Deputy Health Minister Ged Kearney said the government was in constant contact with investigating authorities. The incident should be clarified as soon as possible.
