Australia Detects Deadly Virus from Mosquitoes, No Vaccine

Jakarta, CNNIndonesia

Australia detect types of viruses that can be deadly in certain types of mosquitoes.

The New South Wales (NSW) Health Service Center detected Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVE) in mosquitoes in the western town of Menindee.

MVE which can be transmitted from mosquito bites to humans can cause diseases that attack the nerves of the brain and can cause death.

Quoted from ABC NewsNSW Health Protection Executive Director Richard Broome said there was no vaccine against the MVE virus so far.

“There is no vaccine or special treatment for MVE. The best way is to prevent being bitten by this type of mosquito. The mosquito is very active at dusk and dawn,” said Broome.

“Preventing from being bitten by mosquitoes will also protect oneself from viral infections originating from these mosquitoes, including Japanese encephalitis.

Cases of disease caused by the MVE virus in NSW occurred in 2011.

The Center for Health Services NSW said cases of the MVE virus had resurfaced due to massive flooding in the Menindee region due to the Darling River.
