Press reports revealed today, Thursday, that Australia is considering the possibility of applying to host competitions World Cup 2034Hours after the announcement of Morocco, Spain and Portugal winning the organization of the 2030 World Cup.
The Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported a statement by James Johnson, President of the Australian Football Association, on Thursday, that his country is still studying the possibility of applying to host the World Cup finals in 2034, despite the Asian Football Confederation’s announcement of its support for holding the finals in Saudi Arabia.
FIFA called on the countries of the Asian and Oceania regions to apply to organize the next edition in 2034, after announcing that the finals of the tournament will be held in 2030 in Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
FIFA’s announcement included confirmation that the first three matches of the 2030 edition would be held in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to celebrate the centenary of the competition.
Minutes after the announcement, the Saudi Football Association said that it intends to apply to host the tournament in 2034, while Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Asian Football Confederation, welcomed the move, saying: “The entire Asian football family will stand united in supporting the extremely important initiative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Australia, which was included in the Asian Games in 2006, had previously announced its intention to bid to host the finals in 2034, and Johnson said that nothing had changed in his country’s position.
The President of the Australian Football Association added in a statement, “As I said previously, the Australian Football Association is examining the possibility of applying to host the Club World Cup in 2029 and the World Cup in 2034, or one of the two tournaments.”
Johnson added: “After the tremendous success in organizing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, we feel excited and confident that the football family in Asia and Oceania will have a new opportunity to prove its ability to welcome the world and organize FIFA tournaments in the best way.”
The last date for submitting applications to host the 2034 edition is October 31.
Australia has never hosted a World Cup final and was excluded from the first round of voting during the competition to host the 2022 edition.
The next finals of the tournament will be held in 2026 with the participation of 48 teams in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
