Sydney (Australia), Jan 19 (EFE) .- The Australian government asked this Tuesday for the immediate release of Russian opponent Alexei Navalni, who was arrested on Sunday when he arrived in Russia on a flight from Germany.
“Australia is concerned about the arrest of Alexei Navalni upon his return to Russia. We join our partners in appeals to the Russian authorities to immediately release Mr Navalni,” Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said in a tweet.
Last Sunday, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, called for the immediate release of Navalni, whose detention was described by the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, as an “offense” to the international community and Europe.
The 44-year-old Russian opposition leader spent five months in Germany to recover from a poisoning with a military toxic agent, which kept him in a coma for a month and for which he directly blamed the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
